The Art and Craft of Digital Photography

One evening per week; 7:00 to 9:30pm

Maybe you've recently made the switch from film to digital, or perhaps you’re considering the switch? Maybe you’re struggling with terms like “depth of field” or concepts like “Colour Management”? Perhaps you feel disheartened by all the time you seem to spend in the "Digital Darkroom". Have your pictures ever looked better through the viewfinder than they did in the final print or transparency? And just what is "shooting RAW" and why should you care?

Over 5 weekly sessions let us de-mystify these and other technical elements of photography and show you how to create images with impact. We’ll cover basic concepts including creative use of aperture and shutter speed and show you how to master these technical skills so they become second nature, allowing you to concentrate on the visual and emotional content of your images. We’ll show you how much, and of what equipment you really need to create strong images (it’s probably less than you think).

We’ll show you the six elements of visual design and help you to immediately begin incorporating these into your own images. Finally, we’ll discuss post-processing digital images to bring out the best tonal range, colour and sharpness, and look at some exciting new developments that enhance a photographer’s ability to manage the hundreds of digital images we produce.

This course will be of interest to advanced beginners and intermediate photographers. You should own a film or digital interchangeable lens camera ("SLR") capable of manual control of both shutter speed and aperture and be familiar with the operation of these controls. While we will focus primarily on digital imaging practice, film shooters are welcome. Scanning services will be available at nominal cost so that film shooters can benefit from discussions of digital enhancement techniques. This course is not well suited to "Point-and-Shoot" cameras as owners of these cameras will find that they are unable to make full use of the techniques discussed in class owing to the imitations of this type of camera.

Bring up to 5 images of your own to the course for discussion: bring images you like as well those you’d like to improve. Through weekly lectures, discussion, assignments and critiques we’ll help you become a better image maker. As a bonus we are planning a weekend field trip to an image rich location to put into action the concepts we have learned in the class.

Tuition is $249. Email or call 604-307-2451 to register. You may also register by calling the Phoenix Art Workshops at 604-448-1860
